英语里面有些许多知识点是和中文矛盾的，比如although… but…，虽然和但是有时同时出现将会是一种错误的表达，这是为什么呢？
一、英语不能说although…but
许多同学都知道，英语习惯上不能将汉语中的“虽然……但是……”直译为 although… but…。
如：Although she is very poor, but she has not lost her dignity. 她虽然很穷，但没有失去她的尊严。
正：Although she is very poor, she has not lost her dignity.
正：She is very poor, but she has not lost her dignity.
二、为什么不能说although...but
按英语语法，although 为从属连词，用以引导让步状语从句，它表明整个句子为复合句。
but 为从属连词，用以引导让步状语从句，它表明整个句子为复合句。
由于在同一句中既用了从属连词 although，又用了并列连词 but ，使得该句一半像复合句，一半像并列句，从而导致错误。正确的做法是，任意去掉 although 和 but 中的一个，使之要么成为复合句，要么成为并列句。
三、although一定不能与but连用吗
我们是不是可以说although 永远不能与but连用呢？那也不一定。although引导的从句不能与but,however连用,但可与yet,still连用.
Although用法如下：
1.although较正式,语气强
Although he was tired,he went on working.
2.although引导的从句放在主句前后均可,有时还可放在句中.
Although many difficulties are still ahead,we are determined to make greater achievements.尽管在前面的道路上还有许多困难,但是,我们决心要取得更大的成就.
He often helps me with my English although he is quite busy.尽管他相当忙,但是还常常帮我学英语.
3. although引导的从句不能与but,however连用,但可与yet,still连用.
不能说：Although he was old,but he worked hard.应把but去掉.当然,保留but而去Although也可.
注意:although 的几不:
although不能指假设的情况
although不能作并列连词
although不能作副词,放在词尾
